GOODesign is a design studio established in Seoul, Korea by a representative who has been active in product design and 3D CG field for 20 years. As a design company that pursues a reasonable and differentiated digital design, it has always presented a new direction through working with clients such as Hyundai Motor, Siemens Korea and beiersdorf. This time, we have put out the life product for 3D printing by utilizing various technique design based on the shape of the Class-A surface. These products are especially the result of deep research on the 3D printing dominant shape that can not be mass-produced using a mold.

With the request and high vote from FAB365.net's request page, this time, I created a Russian folding T34-85 tank that was renowned in World War II.
T-34-85 Tank request
This tank was the main Russian tank of the time when Germany created the Tiger tank to fight against it during World War II.

When designing this, I planned to use the structure of the folding Tiger tank I made earlier. However, since the T34-85 tank is smaller in size than the previously created Tiger tank, the structure of the folding Tiger tank cannot be used and the new structure is applied. (It always seems like that.)

The structure of two wheels on one wheel axle was also difficult to fit in a small size. Making the caterpillar to engage the wheels of the rear wheel structure was to create a new caterpillar that was completely different from the one used for the foldable Tiger tank previously.

The folding process is as follows.
1. Fit the front and bottom parts of the body.
2. Insert the part with wheels on the left side to the left side of the body.
3. Insert the part with wheels on the right side to the right side of the body.
4. Connect the tracks with a long one. Prepare two sets of this.
5. Put the prepared tracks on one of the wheels, align it with the concave groove of the rear wheel, and then insert and connect the beginning and end of the track. Connect the track on the other side in the same way.
6. Put the gun on the turret.
7. Attach the cartridge with adhesive.

How do I make the tracks move? I printed the 100% model and the tracks were too short. So I lengthened them from 129mm to 134mm and they fit perfect.

However they now collide with the chassis and make it near impossible to rotate. They feel like they’re seized and will only move with extreme, near braking force.

It’s a shame because in the video the model looks perfect but in reality it is not

Worse caterpillar ever! I just can't assembly it to one long part, its crumbling to tracks all time! Arrrgh!

Your Track (Caterpillar refers to a worm, and is the name of a heavy equipment company. In some countries, caterpillars are called this company's name because the company's products were introduced when first introducing heavy equipment equipped with tracks) Print photo If you show us we may be able to help you solve the problem.

I went ahead and did one 150% larger. .4 print head at .28 height. 28 hours for the main body. 7 hours for the tracks. A couple hours for the other parts. I had 2 stuck wheels... the ones with notches for the tracks (2 small front wheels). I was able to carve the circle out a tiny bit and free them up. So all wheels spin but with some drag. Caterpillars I did the change I noted in my prior review and then up-scaled to 150% of that which was pretty much spot on. Fit first try. I did break the barrel off accidentally when messing with the tracks. I printed a new one on it's side with supports so it will now flex rather than break. I have to sand it a bit to get off the rough patches from the supports. So... at 150% this is considerably larger as you can see in the side by side. I use PLA which is brittle so don't drop it. I did white as I was thinking winter version. I may paint it if I get some time to do so. I like it and it is a fun project.

Tricky to print. On the caterpillar I changed the Y 129.7372 mm length to 134 mm and the z 5.4 mm height to 5.6 mm. Uncheck the Uniform Scaling as you only want to change these 2, Leave the Y at 87 mm. Originally my caterpillars were too short and too tight. These changes made them fit although still not enough room for them to move around the wheels so you aren't going to roll this around and have the tracks move. Just not enough clearance with the top. But it looks good. All my wheels turn individually but they have drag. I printed 4 where they were all stuck eventually reducing flow to 90% and then everything worked although still very snug and I had to wiggle and push very carefully not to break anything. I used PLA which is brittle so these are somewhat fragile. They look good though and I have three decent ones now. The white one was .12 layer and 27 hours for the Hull... 6.5 hours for the tracks. I did the green ones at .28 and it took 11 hours for the hull and 2.5 hours for the tracks. Very similar quality considering the time saved. Although... not much need to print more although I am considering gifting one or two. I'm wanting to try to upscale this 150%. Slicer says... 30 hours at .28 layer height.

Followed your guide on the tracks. Managed to get them to fit as the file provided with the model the tracks are too short. Fact.

Did you ever manage to get them to function? as they don't roll although they fit this time.

Seems like the thickness is too much, they catch the chassis and prevent them from rolling

Very nice model, but I'm very disappointed with my results on caterpillars (Cura + Ender 3 pro). I was playing with settings (raft+horizontal expansion) and have two near acceptable but bad results:

    1. Very tight caterpillar, too short to install.
    2. Very loose caterpillar, too long for tight fit.

I can't get something in the middle.

I want to suggest you make another caterpillar version to print with flex filament (like TPU or Elastan). It should be without any joints (hard linked like deco one), and it should be closed in circle right from the bed, so it must lay on side. Flex can be stretched so it wouldn't be a problem to install in on wheels.

In this way I could print it without any issues with length and strength.

Besides it could be much stronger to play for small children. I want to try your other models with caterpillars, but afraid for same results.

    Can you make it, please?

If the track does not disassemble, a little looseness is normal. Increasing the Extrusion multiply rather than the Scale-up helps to avoid disassembling the Track components. This will result in the parts becoming thicker overall, which reduces the amount of slackening or falling out of the track parts.
I hope this will be helpful to you, and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

    1. Caterpillars of this tank are short! I cannot assemble the caterpillars into the tank. Maybe I have to print one more caterpillar-deco for compensation. Please fix this.

    2. After printing, the turret is stucked into the hull, I don't know how to get it rotated. Please help me.

I've been using Ultimate Cura slicer.

    1) The reason that the number of tracks is insufficient is because the protruding part of the track and the concave part of the wheel do not match. If you get this part right, you will never run out of tracks. Please also refer to YouTube videos and other customer prints and reviews.

    2) There are several reasons why the turret does not move, please check the print-tip.

    Wow! Your print is great.
Despite printing with a 0.2mm layer, all parts fit well.
This means you have a good understanding of 3D printing.
Looking forward to more prints and reviews.
    thank you.

I am not a big expert on tanks but I am pretty sure that the track link that is used on the tank hull should be the same size as the ones used for the actual tracks :).
Could you add a single track link to the model files so we can print that instead of the smaller sized one?

Very good design but I had problems joining the pieces of the tracks, it seems that they are short and when trying to join them my small raised wheels break. I would like to print again but I am afraid that the same thing will happen.

    1) The protruding part of the track must fit into the grooves of the front and rear wheels to fit the track.

    2) If the wheel is broken, increase the number on the wall to 3 or increase the infill to make it more sturdy, and the wheel will not break easily.

    Please check youtube video.
And I can tell you in more detail if you show me the picture.

I hope you succeed to print. Thank you~
